Privacy Policy — StudyHUD

StudyHUD ("we," "our," or "the extension") is an AI-powered reading and study tool available as a browser extension and web application at app.studyhud.com. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.

What we collect

Account information. When you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address, and profile picture from Google. We use this only to identify your account and do not use it for any other purpose.

Content you save. When you highlight text and save it, we store the highlighted text, the source page's URL and title, any notes or tags you add, and the folder you organize it into.

AI-generated content. When you ask StudyHUD to explain, summarize, quiz, or otherwise process something you've highlighted, the highlighted text is sent to our AI backend and processed using a third-party language model provider. The response (explanations, summaries, quiz questions, etc.) is stored alongside your highlight so you don't have to regenerate it.

Usage and settings data. We store your app preferences (such as default explanation detail level), review schedules for spaced repetition, and locally-cached data to make the extension faster and work offline where possible.

How we store your data

Your notes, folders, highlights, and account data are stored in a managed database (Supabase), associated with your account and protected so that only you can access your own data. Some settings and temporary data are also cached locally in your browser via chrome.storage.local.

How we use your data

We use your data only to operate StudyHUD: to save and organize your highlights, generate AI explanations and study material, sync your notes across devices, and remind you when it's time to review something.

We do not sell your data. We do not use your highlighted content or notes to serve ads, and we do not share your data with third parties except the service providers necessary to operate StudyHUD (our database provider and our AI processing provider), each of whom is contractually restricted from using your data for their own purposes.

Data retention

Deleted notes and folders are moved to Trash and permanently removed after 7 days. You can permanently delete something immediately from Trash if you don't want to wait. If you delete your account, we delete your associated data.

Your choices

You can review, edit, organize, or delete your notes and folders at any time from the StudyHUD dashboard. You can sign out at any time, which ends your session on that device. To request full account deletion, contact us at jacqueline.li@studyhud.com.

Permissions we request (extension)

Storage: to save your settings and cache data locally.
activeTab: to detect text you highlight and display the StudyHUD overlay on the page you're reading.
Host permissions (studyhud.onrender.com, supabase.co, googleapis.com): to send highlighted text for AI processing, to sync your notes/folders, and to support Google sign-in.

We do not request or use permissions beyond what's needed for these purposes.

Children's privacy

StudyHUD is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from children under 13.

Changes to this policy

If we make material changes to this policy, we'll update the date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, notify users within the app.
